"Calangute will cast a spell on you while you savour her wild, wilful waters. Once the Mecca of hippies, the fishing village was an attraction beyond compare" , This was history...
But now it has been developped by promoters and Hotels, some of them do not respect any environnemental laws!
Calangute is now the state's most popular resort, typifies what happend when development run out of control.
This article below is extract from the Rough guide of Goa:
Multi-storey hotel complexes have been thrown up along the entire lenght of the beach, yet the village lacks a sewage treatment plant, provision for waste disposal and descent roads. In addition many of the ritzy new resorts have been so hastily erected that they are certain to deteriorate badly over the next three or for years... Obviously you can make a difference, try to avoid hotels or resort complex that have chopped down tree or dispossessed villagers of land. Finally, if you book a package holiday and find yourself in a hotel that has infringed environnement legislation, complain to its owners, and write to your tour operator when you get home : only throught punter pressure will the developpers be persuaded to act in a ecologically responsible way.
